ABRE MIS OJOS

Abre mis ojos Oh Cristo

Abre mi corazon

yo quiero verte, yo quiero verte

Y contemplar tu majestad

Y el resplandor de tu gloria

Derrama tu amor y poder

Mientras cantamos: Santo, Santo,

Santo, Santo, Santo

Santo, Santo, Santo

Santo, Santo, Santo, Yo quiero verte

JUNTO A TI MI BUEN SEÑOR

Te preciso mi Señor,

Te reclama el corazón;

Ven y muéstrame tu amor

Quiero ser yo también bendición.

Junto a Ti, mi buen Señor,

Quiero andar, mi Salvador;

Día a día guíame;

Óyeme, buen Señor, óyeme.

Yo soy débil mi Señor,

Dame fortaleza hoy;

Pues seguro yo estaré,

Si Tú vas junto a mí, Salvador.

Habla claro, mi Señor,

Quiero oír Tu dulce voz;

Y saber que quieres Tú,

Háblame, lléname, tómame.

EL REY YA VIENE

El comercio ya ha cesado, el bullicio terminó,

Los talleres se han cerrado, la cosecha se dejó;

En las casas no hay labores, en las cortes no hay ley;

El planeta ya está listo para recibir al Rey.

¡Oh el Rey ya viene, el Rey ya viene!

Ya sonó la gran trompeta, y su rostro veo ya;

¡Oh el Rey ya viene, el Rey ya viene!

¡Gloria a Dios! ¡El viene por mí!

En los rostros sonrientes que conocen la verdad,

Se ven vidas redimidas que ya tienen libertad;

Se ven niños y ancianitos que sufrieron gran dolor,

Tienen ya salud y gozo, gracias a su Redentor.

¡Oh el Rey ya viene, el Rey ya viene!

Ya sonó la gran trompeta, y su rostro veo ya;

¡Oh el Rey ya viene, el Rey ya viene!

¡Gloria a Dios!

Ya sonó la gran trompeta, y su rostro veo ya;

¡Oh el Rey ya viene, el Rey ya viene!

¡Gloria a Dios! ¡El viene por mí!

CAMBIA MI CORAZÓN

A Prayer for the Winter Blues

By Meg Bucher, as written for Your Daily Prayer Devotional; posted on crosscards.com

You have fixed all the boundaries of the earth; you have made summer and winter. – Psalm 74:17

Winter pops up in the Bible as early as Genesis 8:1. The literal Hebrew translation of the word means,“harvest time” or“autumn,” but when I dug a little deeper into the word origin I found that winter has been associated with feelings of disdain dating back to ancient times! “Charaph,” the root word, also carries a definition relating back to harvest time, but also this one: “to reproach, taunt, blaspheme, defy, jeopardize, rail, upbraid.” Our modern-day definition of winter links the season to cold temperatures, but there’s no denying the depressive state of the Winter blues that can set in months under gray skies and dead trees. “It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth; you who made both summer and winter,” the psalmist praises in v. 17 of Psalm 74. Amidst dire conditions of a city in ruins, he still becomes overwhelmed by who God is. The VOICE paraphrase of this verse reads, “You have arranged the earth, set all it’s boundaries; You are the Architect of the seasons: summer and winter.”

Winter and Summer are completely different seasons, yet God has a handle on both of them …and us. He doesn’t rip the rug out from our seasonal barometer, taking us from hot summer nights to a frigid blanket of snow. He eases us into the change, walking us from one season to the next with Autumn and Spring in between. God is so creative, He seized the opportunity to create a time for the beauty of transition. In an environment that experiences a full four seasons of change, we seem to constantly live in flux. Maybe that’s the lesson God is teaching us. The moment we linger too long in our comfort zone, we stop growing. Even challenging changes mature the human heart. Through all weather, He remains unchanged. We change, the earth shifts and groans, but He never does. He never changes. He never fails.

When the winter blues threaten to steal our joy, remember that God reigns over all seasons, of the weather, and of our hearts. Let’s pray:

Father,

Praise You for the seasonal change that so many of us witness first hand each year. Even though we can predict an inevitable shift in weather, each time a new wave of beauty ushers onto the scene we are reminded of the amazing way You have created the earth. The beauty in each season reminds us of Your creativity and finite care for life, especially ours.

Winter brings its own set of characteristic landscapes, with blankets of snow and powdery tree branches. Though the winter storms batter us and chill us to the bone, the sun shines onto the sparkling snow thereafter, reminding us that You make beauty out of all things.

Your creation is marvelous. It has the power to pull us out of the doldrums. Thank You for Your faithfulness to remind us through Psalm 74 today how powerful our remembrance of Your character is. Even in the darkest depressive state, buried under a snowfall that has turned shoveled sidewalks into tunnels, we know that worship can spin our hearts on a dime.

The new change is exciting at first, as is every new season that ushers in. It’s easy to let the excitement of the first snowfall and the Christmas Season fuel our childlike wonder for the change of Fall to Winter. A White Christmas and the sound of kids sledding brings a refreshing change to our souls. But once the twinkling lights of Christmas have faded, and the first snowfall has drifted away into dead grass and gray skies, we struggle to remember the glory of this particular season.

Forgive us for allowing the cold, gray skies and short dark winter days to steal the joy of our hearts. Help us use extra downtime to restore our energy and slow our schedules. Soften our hearts to look beyond the inconvenience of the season. For we know that without the tiring leg of the current season, the next one wouldn’t be so welcome and exciting of a change.

Thank You for bringing us to another Winter, and another New Year. Resolutions can seem like impossible tasks to take on when it’s cold outside and the lack of daylight makes the days seem shorter.“You are the Architect of the seasons.” The Architect of our hearts. You have gone before us, and know what lies ahead. You are a good Father, and Your love for us is perfect. We can trust You to pull us through the winter.

Bless us with hearts more like Jesus, patient and perseverant. Watch over our cloud of despair that threatens to set in with the gray skies. Bring bright memories of sunshine and warmth to the top of our minds when we need to be reminded that just as sure as the winter came, it will go. Help us to enjoy every day You bless us with on this earth, seeking Your purpose first, and always, through every kind of weather.

In Jesus Name,

Amen

My Hope Is Built On Nothing Less - 1 Peter 1:3-9

By: Dr. Steven K. Parker

“My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness. I dare not trust the sweetest frame but wholly lean on Jesus’ name.”  Those words were penned by Edward Mote, a Baptist minister in England, back in the 1800s, but they’ve been bouncing around in my head all week as I’ve had conversations with people about the current political turmoil in which our nation is mired. In this polarizing climate, opinions are held strongly and shared passionately. In the midst of these conversations a phrase slipped out of my mouth before I realized fully what I was saying, “I’m glad my hope is not based on any of this stuff, because it’s a mess.”

Walking away from those conversations, it seemed that the words of Mote’s hymn kept ringing in my ears: “In every rough and stormy gale, my anchor holds within the vale. When all around my soul gives way, he then is all my hope and stay.  On Christ the solid rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand.” I’m glad those words got stuck in my head, because I’ve needed that comforting message.

These are trying times and the debates we’re having are important. How do we work toward racial reconciliation to our broken land? What does it take to ensure a safe and fair election at a national level? What does an atmosphere that fosters the freedom of speech look like in a digital / social media age?  How do we deal with deep seated disagreements about the direction of our nation and recover from violence that has boiled over the surface throughout our country and even in the center of our government? Those are just a few of the many important questions that we need to wrestle through, and I have to admit I don’t have all the answers and if I did, we likely wouldn’t agree on many of them. The seriousness of these problems and my own tendency to be skeptical about the possibility of them being solved makes me all the more grateful that our hope is not in any political party or politician.

While I don’t know the answers to many of the questions that plague us, I am convinced that it would be a good start for us to live with the love, grace, mercy, forgiveness, and reconciling Spirit of Jesus on full display, looking toward his sure and certain return, trusting that, even now when it might not seem like it, He is in fact “making all things new.”  May the last verse of Mote’s song keep our hearts set in the right direction as we seek to live as Christ’s hands and feet in all the messiness and brokenness of this world: “When he shall come with trumpet sound, oh, may I then in him be found, dressed in his righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne.”

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.” (1 Peter 1:3-9)

House plans to impeach the president:  Why I am a Christian patriot but not a Christian nationalist

By Dr. Jim Denison

House Democrats are expected to vote today on a measure calling for President Trump to be removed from office through the 25th Amendment. They also plan to vote Wednesday to impeach the president.

An FBI memo is warning law enforcement across the US of possible armed protests at all fifty state Capitols beginning this Saturday. And the Pentagon has authorized up to fifteen thousand National Guardsmen to support local law enforcement before and during the presidential inauguration on January 20.

Despite all the turmoil that America is experiencing, I am an American patriot.

A patriot but not a nationalist

Webster defines a “patriot” as “a person who loves his or her country and is ready to boldly support and defend it.” My father fought for America in World War II and his father in World War I. I am unspeakably grateful for their sacrifices and those of millions of others who served and died so that I can live in freedom.

Every time I travel overseas, when I return I thank God for the privilege of living in America. I love our country and want God’s best for her.

However, while I am a Christian patriot, I am not a Christian nationalist.

As we noted yesterday, many are blaming evangelicals for the Capitol riots and calling on us to repudiate “Christian nationalism.” There are many ways to understand this term, but a common definition is that “the United States was founded as a Christian nation and must continue to be one.”

This subject is far more complex than we have space to discuss fully, but I will note that nations are geopolitical entities with borders, populations, and governments. By contrast, a Christian is a person who has trusted in Christ as their personal Savior and Lord. A nation cannot do this.

As a result, neither America nor any other nation can logically be a “Christian nation.” It is true that many Americans are Christians. We should pray and work for more Americans to become Christians. But from its founding to today, our nation cannot by biblical definition be a “Christian” nation.

The only reference to religion in the Constitution is in Article VI: “No religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.” God is mentioned in the Declaration of Independence, of course, with its famous affirmation that “all men are created equal” and “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights.” But these words were written by a man who denied the deity of Jesus and dismissed biblical miracles as myth.

Washington and Adams on faith and morality

While neither America nor any other nation can be “Christian” by biblical definition, it is true that America was founded within the context of the Judeo-Christian worldview.

President George Washington declared in his 1796 “Farewell Address”: “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports.” President John Adams wrote in 1798, “We have no Government armed with Power capable of contending with human Passions unbridled by morality and Religion” and added, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious People. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”

It should not be our goal as Christians to “make America a Christian nation again” since no nation can be Christian by definition. But it should be our goal to lead as many people as possible to make Jesus their Lord, knowing that the morality that results from following Christ is vital to our democracy and the common good.
Three ways to help people follow Jesus

What steps will help more Americans trust Christ?

One: Trust Jesus not just for our salvation but also, as I noted yesterday, for personal sanctification that draws others to our Lord.

Two: Trust Jesus to change human hearts, something no political leader or party can do.

No president or party can convict of sin or save souls. While Christians most definitely should participate in public service and the political process, we should do so as a means to the end of serving and glorifying Jesus, all the while praying and working to share our faith as persuasively and graciously as we can (1 Peter 3:15–16).

Three: Love Jesus enough to love everyone he loves and thus do the hard work of influencing our culture one person at a time.

For instance, I believe passionately that abortion on demand should be illegal in America and pray for the day when it is overturned by the Supreme Court. But on that day, abortion would still be legal in twenty-eight states. While we should work to end legalized abortion, we should also love and care for pregnant women in our community who might choose to end their babies’ lives today.

“I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision”

Jesus gave Paul this commission to the nations: “To open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me” (Acts 26:18). Now our Lord has extended this commission to us.

The apostle could testify in response, “I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision” (v. 19).

When this day is over, will you be able to say the same?

Following The God Dream

From Robin Wiley:

This excerpt is from a devotional I am currently reading on YouVersion Bible App called “Dreams Redeemed” by Harmony Grillo. Such a great and telling title for all of us as we are in the beginning of this New Year 2021. For some of us, 2020 flew by quickly in a blurred rush while for others it dragged on like a boring 3 ½ hour movie you must sit through with your spouse because he really, really wants to see it. Regardless, we are all at the beginning of this New Year with so many hopes and dreams on the horizon. We should be able to dream big, right? Let’s try not to let the sour taste of 2020 hinder our efforts to follow our “God dreams” in our hearts. I hope you enjoy this particular devotional entitled, “Following The God Dream”.

Faith does not make us immune to the hardships of life. There are moments when jobs are lost, hearts are broken, or loved ones are taken before their time.

There are other times when we are left waiting (and waiting and waiting) for our dreams to come to fruition. The dream for a child, a spouse, or for a relationship to be restored. For a loved one to overcome an illness or addiction. For a break in our career. Our hearts are left aching with longing for what we don’t yet have. Sometimes, we ache for so long that our hope dwindles and we may even stop dreaming, so it doesn’t hurt so badly anymore.

God cares about our dreams. In fact, He places “God dreams” in each of our hearts. But, if I desire the dream more than God, The Giver of Dreams, I make the dream an idol.

From the time I was two years old, I wanted to be a famous actress. As a child, I spent hours in the mirror developing characters. Abuse and exploitation derailed me from all of my dreams, including that one. When I began walking with Jesus, I decided to pursue acting again.

I was booking work and having a great time building a career but, I soon realized that God had a different dream for my life than the one I had been pursuing.

If I am honest, my desire to be an actress was partly about wanting to feel a sense of significance. God wanted me to find my worth in Him, not in the recognition and attention I could receive as an actress. I also began to understand that He wanted to use the pain from my past to bring hope and freedom to others.

I decided to follow the God Dream for my life and in 2003, I found Treasures, an outreach and support group of victims of sexual exploitation and trafficking. Every day, I get to see lives impacted as a result of my decision to follow the God-dream for my life! If I had continued to hold on to my dream of being an actress, or worse, let it become an idol in my life, I would have missed the dream that God had in mind for me!

God cares about us, and He cares about our dreams. He cares enough that He is willing to redirect us away from what we think we want, so that He can lead us into what He has for us.

There is a God dream for your life. It might be something you are already walking towards, or it could be something completely unexpected. I believe that as you hold your plans and reams with open hands, and trust Him with the process, He will lead you into the fullness of what He has in store for you.

1 Corinthians 2:9

9 But, as it is written,

“What no eye has seen, nor ear heard,
    nor the heart of man imagined,
what God has prepared for those who love him.”

Isaiah 55:9

For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
    so are my ways higher than your ways
    and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Prayer: Father God, you are the Grand Master of the universe and your power and authority reigns over all. Thank you for caring for me and my dreams. Please show me the direction you want me to take this week. Guide each step and place in my heart a burning desire to drawer nearer to you as I take this journey. In your precious Son’s holy name - Amen.

On A Hill Far Away...

Hebrews 10:19-25

19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Some time ago, my dad and I were discussing politics in the living room while my 92 year old grandma sat quietly and listened.  Because she has dementia, she often repeats the same stories and asks the same questions within just a few minutes of one another. She likely isn’t aware of most current events, but she could tell things were getting heated. After a few minutes she interrupted, “Mijo, do you know this song?” Then my beautiful grandma sang,

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross

The emblem of suffering and shame

And I love that old cross where the dearest and best

For a world of lost sinners was slain

So I'll cherish the old rugged cross

Till my trophies at last I lay down

I will cling to the old rugged cross

And exchange it some day for a crown

For all my family members reading this, yes, she sang it in Spanish. But regardless of the language, my grandma understood that our political discourse had completely left Jesus on the periphery. We needed a reminder to put our lives’ focus back on Jesus. My dad and I sheepishly joined in singing the beautiful song and the rage that had built up inside of us faded away as we focused on the one who humbled himself to death, even death on a cross. Now, anytime our conversations even begin to get out of hand, one of us (or my mom) will sing, “On a hill far away…” as a reminder to keep our minds on the only one who can really save us from the problems of this world.

This has been a difficult time in our communities, our nation and the world. I don’t know what issues or frustrations you may be going through, but I do know that we can “hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.” Maybe singing George Bernard’s Old Hymn “The Old Rugged Cross” can help you to “spur one another on toward love and good deeds” instead of getting caught up in issues that ultimately have little eternal value.

Dear God,

Help us to focus on you as a model of humility as we learn to live Godly lives in an ungodly world. Help us to hold on to the hope we have in you because you are the only one who will not let us down! May the hope we have be a light to those who are in darkness as they see that You are the answer to the problems of our day!

Amen

Ray Sanchez is the Pastor of Worship and Children’s Discipleship at FBC Weslaco. When he visits his grandma, he enjoys hearing her sing the songs of her youth and share her wonderful stories.

Llamada a la adoración - Salmos 29

Tributad a Jehová, oh hijos de los poderosos, Dad a Jehová la gloria y el poder.  Dad a Jehová la gloria debida a su nombre; Adorad a Jehová en la hermosura de la santidad.  Voz de Jehová sobre las aguas;

Call to Worship - Psalm 29 (ESV)

Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings,[a]
 ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
    worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness.[b]

The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
    the God of glory thunders,
    the Lord, over many waters.
The voice of the Lord is powerful;
    the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.

The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
    the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf,
    and Sirion like a young wild ox.

The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.
The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;
    the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

The voice of the Lord makes the deer give birth[c]
    and strips the forests bare,
    and in his temple all cry, “Glory!”

10 The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;
    the Lord sits enthroned as king forever.
11 May the Lord give strength to his people!
    May the Lord bless[d] his people with peace!

My Lighthouse

In my wrestling and in my doubts

In my failures You won't walk out

Your great love will lead me through

You are the peace in my troubled sea whoa oh

You are the peace in my troubled sea

In the silence You won't let go

In the questions Your truth will hold

Your great love will lead me through

You are the peace in my troubled sea whoa oh

You are the peace in my troubled sea

My Lighthouse my Lighthouse

Shining in the darkness

I will follow You oh

My Lighthouse my Lighthouse

I will trust the promise

You will carry me safe to shore

Safe to shore safe to shore safe to shore

I won't fear what tomorrow brings

With each morning I'll rise and sing

My God's love will lead me through

You are the peace in my troubled sea whoa oh

You are the peace in my troubled sea

My Lighthouse my Lighthouse

Shining in the darkness

I will follow You oh

My Lighthouse my Lighthouse

I will trust the promise

You will carry me safe to shore

Safe to shore safe to shore safe to shore

Fire before us

You're the brightest

You will lead us

Through the storms (hey)

How Great Thou Art

O Lord my God

When I in awesome wonder

Consider all the worlds

Thy hands have made

I see the stars

I hear the rolling thunder

Thy pow’r thru’out

The universe displayed

Then sings my soul

My Savior God to Thee

How great Thou art

How great Thou art

Then sings my soul

My Savior God to Thee

How great Thou art

How great Thou art

And when I think

That God His Son not sparing

Sent Him to die

I scarce can take it in

That on the cross

My burden gladly bearing

He bled and died

To take away my sin

Then sings my soul

My Savior God to Thee

How great Thou art

How great Thou art

Then sings my soul

My Savior God to Thee

How great Thou art

How great Thou art

Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)

My chains are gone I’ve been set free

My God my Savior has ransomed me

And like a flood His mercy reigns

Unending love amazing grace

Amazing grace how sweet the sound

That saved a wretch like me

I once was lost but now I’m found

Was blind but now I see

‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear

And grace my fears relieved

How precious did that grace appear

The hour I first believed

The Lord has promised good to me

His word my hope secures

He will my shield and portion be

As long as life endures

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow

The sun forbear to shine

But God who called me here below

Will be forever mine

Will be forever mine

You are forever mine

A Prayer for When the Rogue Waves of Life Hit

By: Meg Bucher, as written for Your Daily Prayer Devotional, posted to crosscards.com

“His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation.” - Luke 1:50 NIV

After a beautiful day out on the water, we headed to the island for dinner. On the way, our Great Lake threw us a surprise, as it has been known to do. Though the water was flat and calm, my daughters, niece, and I were suddenly staring straight at a big wave! The set of three rogue waves caught all of us off guard, and the water spilled over the bow and down through the rest of the boat. Soaked, shocked, and a little scared, three young faces looked at me to gauge my reaction. In situations like that, we don’t always have time to compose ourselves. The natural state of our soul bleeds right out of our facial expressions. However, God granted me supernatural calm, enough to allow me to comfort my youngest daughter’s fears, and return her to her seat in the front of the boat.

“His mercy flows in wave after wave on those who are in awe before him.” Luke 1:50 MSG

Rogue waves can change our life in an instant, no matter how prepared we think we are to face the day ahead of us. We can know the weather report, see out on the horizon, and feel the wind, but it won’t stop every rogue wave from splashing into our lives. No matter how much we would like to think we are in control, God is the only one whose hand is on all. The only thing we can do is seek His perspective each day through His living Word. When we do that, he prepares our souls for what we cannot see coming our way. Let’s pray today for God’s perspective for when the rogue waves of life hit:

Father,

Help us to stay grounded in the truth of Your Word, and Your Word, alone. Let us not look to news reports and weather forecasts and the final word, but always leave room for You to move in our lives. We pray to see life from Your perspective. Just like waves often come in sets of three, Your grace falls on us, wave after wave. When we are shocked by what the day has given us, help us to embrace the grace Jesus died to grant us. No matter what we encounter, He is with us. Nothing can snatch us from His hand.

Some days, we are left drenched and stunned, but there is always an abundance of grace by which our Savior embraces us. Each time, we get back up by His strength. Not just to get by another day, but to live it to the full. Father, thank You for protecting us, saving us, and defending us. In ways we will never know or realize, You go before us to prepare the way.

Thank you for the way you faithfully care for us, encouraging us in times of trial and calming our very souls in a way we could not. Today, we re-submit the state of our souls to You. In any way in which we have attempted to take control of different areas of our lives, forgive us. May our lives bring honor and glory to your name, even when our lives are soaked and pummeled from rogue waves. Bless and protect us, Father, from what only You can see coming this day… and every day.

In Jesus Name,

Amen.

The God Who Gathers

By: Dr. Steven K. Parker

“Therefore thus says the Lord God: Now I will restore the fortunes of Jacob and have mercy on the whole house of Israel, and I will be jealous for my holy name. They shall forget their shame and all the treachery they have practiced against me, when they dwell securely in their land with none to make them afraid, when I have brought them back from the peoples and gathered them from their enemies’ lands, and through them have vindicated my holiness in the sight of many nations. Then they shall know that I am the Lord their God, because I sent them into exile among the nations and then assembled them into their own land. I will leave none of them remaining among the nations anymore. And I will not hide my face anymore from them, when I pour out my Spirit upon the house of Israel, declares the Lord God.” (Ezekiel 39:25-29)

            Ezekiel first wrote these words during a terrible time for God’s chosen people.  The judgment of God had descended upon them through the invading armies of Babylon and the Judeans who survived that devastation had been hauled off into captivity.  As refugees in Babylon, God’s people had certain freedoms to move around and worship and earn a living, but no matter how hard they tried to acclimate to this foreign land, it wasn’t home.  Things were not the same.  The people longed for the normalcy they experienced before the destruction of their temple and this season of exile that followed it, but nothing that looked much like normal could be seen anywhere on the horizon.  That struggle gave rise to the exilic Psalmist’s painful question: “How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a foreign land?” (Psalm 137:4).

            Perhaps we can relate to those emotional struggles of the exiles of the Old Testament more now than we could at the beginning of last year.  Sudden shutdowns, limitations of large gatherings, social distancing, and mask mandates have left most of us reeling.  Online worship and parking lot services have been a great gift and we are eternally grateful for the Alfaro family and others who have worked diligently to make these efforts at worshipful connections possible.  But we must admit, it doesn’t feel like we’re home yet.  Things are not the same.  We long for some sense of the normalcy that we so recently took for granted.  We miss shared meals, hugs, the sight of the smiling faces of our familia of faith, and the joy of laughter that so often filled our beautiful buildings that for so many years have bustled with great times of worship, fellowship, and service.  We hear reports of successful immunizations and eventual herd immunity, but the challenges of this pandemic still loom large.  We find ourselves relating on many levels to the exilic worshipers who sang their songs of lament by the rivers of Babylon where they “sat down and wept,” remembering Zion (Psalm 137:1).

         It was from this context of exile, grief, and longing that Ezekiel’s prophetic words came to the Old Testament people of God and now come to us.  The prophet’s hope-filled words pointed toward a better day that would dawn for the people of God.  Things were bad, but God would work to restore His people and show mercy toward them.  Their sin and shame would be forgiven and forgotten, and they would no longer have to live in fear once God restored them to their land.  This terrible season of exile would, in hindsight, prove to be a growing experience for them, and it would end.  God was going to gather them from the four corners to which they had been scattered and bring them back home, pouring His Spirit out upon them.

         I don’t know about you, but all that sounds pretty good to my corona-weary ears!  Things are not normal now, but they will be again.  It doesn’t feel like we’re home yet, but God has not forsaken us.  Life will re-open for us, we will gather together again, masks will be tossed, and hugs will be given (Get ready, Chris Ramirez)!  Where we have grown disconnected, we will re-connect.  We will again come to be known as the “eaten-est” church in the valley as we break bread together in the beautiful, joyous communion of fellowship.  We will smile and laugh again, together.  We will eventually join in prayerfully with another Psalmist who declared, “Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning” (Psalm 30:5).  Even from our places of exile, in Christ, we look to the future with faith and claim the promise of God’s presence through the greatest difficulties life can dish out.

         I hope you’ll join us on Sunday in our parking lot or online where we will continue to look at these hope-saturated words about our great, gathering God.  If you haven’t been to one of our parking lot services in-person, come give it a try.  It’s not the same but let me assure you it does my heart good to see you all.  In the meantime, “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace” (Numbers 6:24-26).  Amen.

Country club waiter impacts thousands of children in Ghana: “New Year’s Resolutions That Will Actually Lead to Happiness”

By Dr. Jim Denison

Samuel Quarcoo is a waiter at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland, where he has worked since 1975. He is also a part-time teacher in the area. A native of Ghana, where he walked barefoot to school, he immigrated to the US through the generosity of an aunt and earned a master’s degree in teaching.

In 1999, after telling some of his students about the plight of students in Ghana, they decided to donate money to buy school supplies for them. Quarcoo then chose to continue sending supplies to three schools in his native land. For years, as the Washington Post reports, “he quietly bought backpacks, paper, and crayons on his own and shipped them to school administrators.”

Then his friends and neighbors found out. Though Quarcoo has been furloughed from waiting tables since March due to the pandemic, club members still donated $19,000 to his efforts this year. The funds were used to buy supplies for nearly two thousand students. “The generosity is incredible—the club has been like a second home to me,” Quarcoo said. “The members all have such big hearts. The difference they’ve made for the schoolchildren in Ghana is inspiring.”

According to one donor, however, the difference is Quarcoo: “His heart is right in front of you—you can see his soul when you meet him.”

A Sunday morning shooting at a Texas church

We heard repeatedly in 2020 that it was a year unlike any in living memory. It seems that 2021 is beginning in unprecedented ways as well.

A man hiding from police in a church bathroom shot and killed the pastor Sunday morning before being taken into custody. Two others were injured. The homes of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell were vandalized with graffiti over the New Year’s holiday after a two-thousand-dollar stimulus check bill failed to pass in Congress last Friday.

A key COVID-19 model predicts 150,000 more deaths in the US over the next month, nearly doubling the December record of 77,500. Marking yesterday’s anniversary of the death of Iran’s Gen. Qasem Soleimani, an Iranian official warned that those linked to the killing “will not be safe on Earth.”

In response to these difficult and divisive days, Harvard professor Arthur C. Brooks has a terrific article in The Atlantic titled, “New Year’s Resolutions That Will Actually Lead to Happiness.” After surveying literature regarding our typical difficulties in keeping resolutions for the new year, he determines that “the key to success is positive motivation.” Then he identifies the two motivations that most lead to happiness: forgiveness and gratitude.

Brooks advises us to make a list of five people to forgive in the new year, then use the REACH technique: Recall the hurt, Empathize with the offender, choose the Altruistic gift of forgiveness, Commit, and Hold on to forgiveness.

Then he encourages us to be more grateful, pointing to research showing that those who keep a list of things for which they are grateful enjoy significantly greater life satisfaction. His advice is to take fifteen minutes to write down five things for which you are grateful. Each evening before retiring, review your list for five minutes. Each week, update it by adding two items.

The path to a life of meaning and joy

While Brooks is an evangelical Christian, he is writing in a secular publication for a secular audience. I am certain he would agree, therefore, with the following addition to his excellent advice.

Over the New Year holiday, I spent a good deal of time in reflection upon the previous year. One simple theme repeatedly echoed in my spirit: the key to the Christian life is Christ. The path to a life of meaning and joy is Jesus. Not just his teachings or his church. Not just our service to his kingdom. Jesus himself. The living, interceding, acting Lord Jesus.

He is our hope of eternal life in a pandemic that threatens humanity. He is our hope of peace in a nation and world filled with divisions. He is our hope of joy in a culture bereft of happiness. He is the key to forgiving those who hurt us and being grateful for all he has given us.

It’s all about Jesus.

The lives of thousands of schoolchildren in Ghana are being changed because of Samuel Quarcoo. Without him, few would know about their needs or donate to meet them. This one person is changing their world.

Here’s how Jesus changes the lives of those who experience him personally: “your sins are forgiven for his name’s sake” (1 John 2:12), “you know him who is from the beginning” (v. 13a), “you have overcome the evil one” (v. 13b), “you know the Father” (v. 13c), and “the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one” (v. 14).

Jesus called himself “the bread of life” and promised, “whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst” (John 6:35, my emphasis). Not the church or religious activities or good works, but Jesus.

A worship song that speaks to our souls

How can the church change the culture more powerfully? The truth is that we cannot. Only Jesus can.

Our culture will continue its downward slide into secularity and immorality unless we offer it something better. That something is a personal relationship with the One for whom all hearts are truly restless until they rest in him.

Such a transforming experience with Christ begins with Christians, of course. We’ll say more about this experience across the week, but for today, let’s close by deciding that we want to know Jesus this year more intimately and personally than ever before.

The worship video in yesterday’s First15 spoke directly to this hunger in our souls. Audrey Assad sings:

All my devotion is like sinking sand / I’ve nothing to cling to but your sweet hand / I’ve no clear emotions keeping me safe at night / Only your presence, like a candlelight.

Then, in words that seem especially appropriate following such a tragic and difficult year, she sings,

After everything I’ve had / After everything I’ve lost / Lord, I know this much is true / I’m still drawn to you

Will you pray her prayer today?

Live Today With Faith and Love

From Robin Wiley:

Here is another treasure from my father-in-law’s collection of memories. Dr. Norman Vincent Peale is the founder of Guideposts, one of my favorite reading materials and also known for his words and wisdom on positive thinking and living.

Back in the days of the 50’s and 60’s - Dr. Peale and his wife hosted a television program called “What's Your Trouble?” where the Peales read letters from viewers and offered advice and encouragement. I aspire to be like him in that regard with the counseling ministry God has blessed my life. The more we can have a positive mental attitude and belief in ourselves as God’s loving creation, the more we can love Him back and make our relationship with God the top priority in our lives.

This write-up below is from “A Moment With Dr. Peale” – which he speaks about two days we should not worry about.  Worry is such a burden to carry – right? So why do we do it? I think this reading has much to tell us on how to approach this new year of 2021. May each of seek to make each day of our lives better than the last and be His light to world!

Live Today With Faith and Love

By Dr. Norman Vincent Peale

In a moment, we’re going to ask God to take away our worries and anxieties. But first, I would like to suggest that there are two days about which we should not worry – two days that should be kept free from fear and worry.

One of these days is yesterday. Whatever happened yesterday, forget it; it is past. Yesterday has passed forever beyond your control. It is gone.

Tomorrow is really beyond your control, too. Until tomorrow’s sun rises, we have no part in it, for it is yet unborn. So why worry about it.

That leaves today. Leave yesterday’s worry behind and live today.

Prayer:

Father God, help us to live one day at a time. Yesterday, with its mistakes and cares, is gone. And there is no point in worrying about tomorrow, for it is yet to come. Let us appreciate today and live it with positive faith and love. We pray for those who are anxious and troubled. May Your everlasting peace fill their minds now with quietness and assurance that this day is good. Even though life may be painful at times, with Your help, we can meet it without anxiety and worry. Take care of us, and help us joyfully to live one day a time. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

-Think positively about yourself…. ask God who made you to keep on remaking you. – Norman Vincent Peale

Happy New Year Family of Faith!!

All Things Work Together for Good - Happy Old Year!

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 ESV

Stay at home orders, the great mask debate, hurricanes, distance working, learning and worshiping, civil unrest, a contentious election cycle, and the loss of dear friends and family members to COVID 19 seem to be the major events that will dominate our memories of 2020. In a frustrating year filled with so many problems, it could be really easy to focus on the negatives.

Of all things to help me see the good in the past year, my phone recently made a video montage that helped remind me of what a great year we actually had. For us, 2020 started with the kid’s award’s ceremonies and a successful CYBL basketball league. Soon after, I got to stay in the hospital after taking Chris Ramirez’ paw to the face while playing basketball at church. That may sound bad, but I’m completely recovered, and because of that paw to the face, we got to experience the church’s outpouring of love and support during a difficult time - praise God!

Throughout the pandemic, our family spent a lot of time together playing board games, cooking, assembling puzzles and creating our Treehouse Club videos with the help of the kids from First Baptist Weslaco and some special guests. Through this time Alaina, my daughter, made a profession of faith and was baptized…along with quite a few other children from our church! In addition, A great team put together our God’s Armor VBS and Rachel helped me hone my recording chops through our worship videos (See Church Music Videos here). In response to the hurricane, our church members, including our great youth, stepped up to muck-out houses that were damaged by the hurricane. I also wrote a children’s musical, attended multiple virtual conferences I would never have been able to do in person, wrote an Advent Hymn, and wrote and recorded a birthday song for Ana with the help of some mutually locked-down artists (hence the prom picture at the beginning of the video). We also took some calculated risks to safely spend time with friends and family, surf the waves of South Padre Island and hike the hills of Tennessee.

And this was just the good in our family! Throughout 2020, church members have remained resilient in their faith through online attendance at Bible studies, worship services and through online giving. Many of us have worshiped at in-person services in spite of facial coverings, changing venues, and extreme heat and cold. Many who mourned the loss of loved ones found comfort in the continuation of our Grief Share ministry and our annual Blue Christmas Service because they serve as reminders of Emmanuel, God with us!

Looking back, it is easy to see how God uses all things to work together for good. Ministries transformed, Bible study teachers adapted, faithful volunteers continued to serve in new ways, and outstanding artists created new offerings of worship. So I guess I can truly say, “thank you iPhone.” JUST KIDDING! Thank You God for being with us through this difficult time. Thank You God for the ability to create, worship, keep in touch through technology and re-prioritize our lives around the things that are really important. Thank You God for a thriving church that has been agile in its ability to worship and serve no matter what comes their way. Thank You God for comforting the broken-hearted and blessing those who mourn. Can you see the good God has done? Maybe the Old Year was happy after all!

Pastor Ray is looking forward to seeing what great things God has in store for FBC Weslaco in 2021. Pray for him as he will be teaching a worship class at Stark College and Seminary this semester!

Call to Worship - Psalm 84

1 How lovely is your dwelling place,
Lord Almighty!
2 My soul yearns, even faints,
for the courts of the Lord;
my heart and my flesh cry out
for the living God.
3 Even the sparrow has found a home,
and the swallow a nest for herself,
where she may have her young—
a place near your altar,
Lord Almighty, my King and my God.
4 Blessed are those who dwell in your house;
they are ever praising you.[c]

Blessed are those whose strength is in you,
    whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.
As they pass through the Valley of Baka,
    they make it a place of springs;
    the autumn rains also cover it with pools.[d]
They go from strength to strength,
    till each appears before God in Zion.

Hear my prayer, Lord God Almighty;
    listen to me, God of Jacob.
Look on our shield,[e] O God;
    look with favor on your anointed one.

10 Better is one day in your courts
    than a thousand elsewhere;
I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God
    than dwell in the tents of the wicked.
11 For the Lord God is a sun and shield;
    the Lord bestows favor and honor;
no good thing does he withhold
    from those whose walk is blameless.

12 Lord Almighty,
    blessed is the one who trusts in you.

Joy to the World

Joy to the world the Lord is come

Let earth receive her King

Let ev'ry heart prepare Him room

And heaven and nature sing

And heaven and nature sing

And heaven and heaven and nature sing

Verse 2

Joy to the world the Savior reigns

Let all their songs employ

While fields and floods rocks hills and plains

Repeat the sounding joy

Repeat the sounding joy

Repeat repeat the sounding joy

Verse 3

He rules the world with truth and grace

And makes the nations prove

The glories of His righteousness

And wonders of His love

And wonders of His love

And wonders wonders of His love

O Come All Ye Faithful

O come all ye faithful

Joyful and triumphant

O come ye O come ye to Bethlehem

Come and behold Him

Born the King of angels

Chorus 1

O come let us adore Him

O come let us adore Him

O come let us adore Him

Christ the Lord

Verse 3

Yea Lord we greet Thee

Born this happy morning

Jesus to Thee be all glory giv'n

Word of the Father

Now in flesh appearing

Worthy is the Lamb, Worthy is the Lamb

You are Holy, Holy,

Are You Lord God Almighty?

Worthy is the Lamb, Worthy is the Lamb

Amen

Blessed Be Your Name

Blessed Be Your Name
In the land that is plentiful
Where Your streams of abundance flow
Blessed be Your name

Blessed Be Your name
When I'm found in the desert place
Though I walk through the wilderness
Blessed Be Your name

Every blessing You pour out, I'll
Turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in, Lord
Still I will say

Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your glorious name

Blessed be Your name
When the sun's shining down on me
When the world's 'all as it should be'
Blessed be Your name

Blessed be Your name
On the road marked with suffering
Though there's pain in the offering
Blessed be Your name

Every blessing You pour out, I'll
Turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in, Lord
Still I will say

Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be Your glorious name

Verse 4

Breathes a life of gathering gloom

Sorrowing sighing bleeding dying

Sealed in the stone cold tomb

Chorus

O star of wonder star of night

Star with royal beauty bright

Westward leading still proceeding

Guide us to Thy perfect light

Verse 5

Glorious now behold Him arise

King and God and sacrifice

Alleluia alleluia

Sounds through the earth and skies

I Wonder as I Wander

I wonder as I wander out under the sky

How Jesus the Savior did come for to die

For poor ornery people like you and I

I wonder as I wander, out under the sky

If Jesus had wanted for any wee thing

A star in the sky or a bird on a wing

Or all of God's angels in heaven to sing

He surely could have had it

Cause He was the King

I wonder as I wander out under the sky

How Jesus the Savior did come for to die

For poor ornery people like you and I

I wonder as I wander out under the sky

Out under the sky

Verse 2:

Call To Worship

He Heals the Brokenhearted

147 Praise the Lord!
For it is good to sing praises to our God;
    for it is pleasant,[a] and a song of praise is fitting.
The Lord builds up Jerusalem;
    he gathers the outcasts of Israel.
He heals the brokenhearted
    and binds up their wounds.
He determines the number of the stars;
    he gives to all of them their names.
Great is our Lord, and abundant in power;
    his understanding is beyond measure.
The Lord lifts up the humble;[b]
    he casts the wicked to the ground.

Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving;
    make melody to our God on the lyre!
He covers the heavens with clouds;
    he prepares rain for the earth;
    he makes grass grow on the hills.
He gives to the beasts their food,
    and to the young ravens that cry.
10 His delight is not in the strength of the horse,
    nor his pleasure in the legs of a man,
11 but the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him,
    in those who hope in his steadfast love.

12 Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem!
    Praise your God, O Zion!
13 For he strengthens the bars of your gates;
    he blesses your children within you.
14 He makes peace in your borders;
    he fills you with the finest of the wheat.

Go Tell It On the Mountain

Go, tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere
Go, tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born!

While shepherds kept their watching
O'er silent flocks by night
Behold throughout the heavens
There shone a holy light

Go, tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere
Go, tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born!

The shepherds feared and trembled
When lo! Above the Earth
Rang out the angel chorus
That hailed our Savior's birth

Go, tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere
Go, tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born!

Down in a lowly manger the humble Christ was born
And God sent us salvation
That blessed Christmas morn

The First Noel

The first Noel the angel did say

Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay

In fields where they lay keeping their sheep

On a cold winter's night that was so deep

Chorus:

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel

Born is the King of Israel

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel

Born is the King of Israel

Silent Night

Silent night, holy night
All is calm, all is bright
'Round yon virgin Mother and Child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent night, holy night
Son of God, oh, love's pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth

Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight!
Glories stream from heaven afar;
Heavenly hosts sing Al-le-lu-ia!
Christ the Savior is born!
Christ the Savior is born!

Christ the Savior is born!

What Child is This?

Verse 1

What Child is this who laid to rest

On Mary's lap is sleeping

Whom angels greet with anthems sweet

While shepherds watch are keeping

This this is Christ the King

Whom shepherds guard and angels sing

Haste haste to bring Him laud

The Babe the Son of Mary

Verse 3

So bring Him incense gold and myrrh

Come peasant king to own Him

The King of kings salvation brings

I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day

Verse 1

I heard the bells on Christmas day

Their old familiar carols play

And wild and sweet the words repeat

Of peace on earth goodwill to men

Verse 2

I thought how as the day had come

The belfries of all Christendom

Had rolled along the unbroken song

Of peace on earth goodwill to men

Verse 3

And in despair I bowed my head

There is no peace on earth I said

For hate is strong and mocks the song

Of peace on earth goodwill to men

Verse 4

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep

God is not dead nor doth He sleep

The wrong shall fail the right prevail

With peace on earth goodwill to men

Verse 5

Till ringing singing on its way

The world revolved from night to day

A voice a chime a chant sublime

Of peace on earth goodwill to men

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

We are so grateful for everyone who has ministered throughout this crazy pandemic.  Our staff has done such a great job helping us stay connected during this unprecedented season; what a blessing their service has been!  Our church’s family devotionals have also been a great blessing to read and write; I am very appreciative of everyone’s efforts in this ministry.  Those devotionals will continue after the first of the year.  In the meantime, we encourage everyone to continue reading their Bibles and suggest reading through the gospel of Luke.

We’re not sure what the future holds, but we are eternally confident in Who holds the future!  No matter what occurs in 2021, we will continue to worship the Lord and serve those who bear His image.

On behalf of the whole Parker family and all of the FBCW staff families, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a blessed New Year!

Blessings,

Steven Parker

“Count Your Blessings”

By Robin Wiley

Another treasure from my father-in-law’s collection of memories. This is something I have seen from time to time on Facebook or it makes it way through email via a chain letter of sorts.  This is about blessings we have but perhaps take for granted.

This Christmas season – be a blessing to someone else in need of a smile, a little kindness, some love or just your presence. Remember – the more you give, the more you will receive from life!  You cannot outgive God!

“Count Your Blessings”  (Author anonymous)

If you woke up this morning with more health than illness, you are more blessed than the million who won’t survive this week.

If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture or the pangs of starvation, you are ahead of 500 million people around the world.

If you attend a church meeting without fear of harassment, arrest, torture, or death, you are more blessed than almost three billion people in the world.

If you have food in your refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof over your head and a place to sleep, you are richer than 75% of this world.

If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace, you are among the top 8% of the world’s wealthy.

If you hold up your head with a smile on your face and are truly thankful, you are blessed because the majority can, but most do not.

If you can hold someone's hand, hug them or even touch them on the shoulder...you are blessed because you can offer healing touch.

If you can read this message, you just received a double blessing in that someone was thinking of you, and furthermore, you are more blessed than over two billion people in the world that cannot read at all.

Have a good day, count your blessings, and pass this along
to remind everyone else how blessed we are.

Prayer:

Father God, forgive me when I am not thankful for the constant blessings you fill my life with every day. Help me to see the needs around me and to open up my heart and life to share the goodness you have bestowed upon me and my family with others. In Jesus Powerful Name – Amen.
